Firm serves up training on alcohol awareness A customer walks up to the register at a local grocery store and places a 12-pack of beer on the counter. Within seconds, the store clerk must make several decisions before ringing up the order. Should the customer be carded? Is she or he old enough to buy alcohol? Does the customer already appear intoxicated?
“Convenience stores and grocery stores have such an incredible liability,” said Kim Pouncey, chief manager of StraightUp LLC, a Blount County company that specializes in alcohol awareness training. “They can be sued if somebody goes in and buys beer, and they have a carload of minors and those minors got drunk and got hurt. There’s all kinds of wacky things that could happen.” Pouncey is aware of local and state laws regarding beer and liquor sales. After having worked in restaurants for nearly 20 years, she started her training company —originally called Pouncey Partners — in 1998.
